Dr Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud delivered the 32nd Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture

New Delhi: The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust in collaboration with the National Museum, Govt of India organized the 32nd Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture. The Lecture was delivered by Dr Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Former Chief Justice of India on “Ethics of Public Life in an Age of Technology”.

Dr Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, while delivering the 32nd Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture, said, “change rarely arrives dramatically—it unfolds quietly, often blurring the line between reality and fabrication.” He cautioned that rapid information flow, deepfakes, and algorithm-driven systems are reshaping public perception and decision-making, while accountability becomes increasingly diffused. Emphasising ethical responsibility, he said technology must be guided by integrity, not convenience.

He also drew attention to emerging concerns such as cyber warfare, misuse of digital platforms, and climate change as a lived reality. Reflecting on Lal Bahadur Shastri’s legacy, he underlined that a just society cannot be built on transactional morality, but on values practiced even without reward. He concluded that every generation inherits an incomplete canvas, with the responsibility to build a more ethical and equitable future.

Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, served as the 50th Chief Justice of India (2022–2024). He played a key role in landmark rulings that strengthened constitutional values, including the recognition of privacy as a fundamental right and the decriminalisation of homosexuality, while advocating for transparency and a more accessible, technology-driven judiciary. His tenure also saw efforts to modernise the judicial system and improve access to justice through digital initiatives.

In his welcome address, Anil Shastri, Holding Trustee of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust said, “It is a matter of great pride for us to continue this legacy of meaningful dialogue that reflects the ideals of simplicity, integrity and selfless service that Lal Bahadur Shastri ji lived by. Shastri ji stood for integrity, humility and accountability in public life. In today’s fast-moving, technology-driven world, these values are more important than ever to ensure trust, transparency and fairness in governance.”

Sunil Shastri  extended the vote of thanks, expressing his deep gratitude to the Chief Guest, Dr Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, for delivering an insightful and thought-provoking lecture”.
