Honoring Medical Service and Academic Excellence: PG Toppers at PMCH to Receive Gold Medals Named After the Dayal Couple

Patna: Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) has taken a significant initiative to honour the proud tradition of medical service and academic excellence. The institute has announced the establishment of two prestigious gold medals in memory of senior physicians Dr. Shankareshwar Dayal (Anaesthesia and Critical Care) and Dr. Rita Dayal (Obstetrics and Gynaecology). These awards will be presented annually to outstanding students in the postgraduate curriculum.

Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Secretary of the PMCH Alumni Association, shared this information with their son, Nishant Dayal, through a letter. He stated that these awards will commence on the institute’s foundation day, February 25, 2026. Under these awards, the Dr. Shankareshwar Dayal Gold Medal will be awarded to the PG topper in anaesthesia, and the Dr. Rita Dayal Gold Medal will be awarded to the PG topper in Obstetrics and gynaecology. These awards are considered symbols of excellence, dedication, and humanitarian medical service.

The Dayal couple, serving at PMCH for over three decades, made significant contributions to both medical education and patient care. They were known for their sensitivity, honesty, and unwavering commitment to their profession.

This honour also has a historical aspect. Dr. Shankareshwar Dayal’s father, Dr. Rameshwar Dayal, was Patna’s first civil surgeon, laying a strong foundation for public healthcare.

Dr. Shankareshwar Dayal passed away in 2003, and Dr. Rita Dayal in 2017. Their legacy is being carried forward by their son, Nishant Dayal, who, through the Dr. Dayal Foundation, has been engaged in numerous humanitarian works for the past two decades, including heart surgeries for children, distributing sewing machines to widows, supporting orphanages, and providing sports equipment to young athletes. He has also been working to nurture cricket talent for 25 years, with players like Sanath Jayasuriya as its ambassador.

Nishant Dayal expressed his delight at this initiative, saying that honouring talented students in his parents’ names is a true recognition of their lifelong dedication. He expressed his gratitude to the PMCH Alumni Association and the Government of Bihar.
